Sad Cypress by Agatha Christie (Hercule Poirot Book 21) – Book Review [No Spoilers]

One of Agatha Christie’s regular murder classics, this book contains a package of surprises, jealousy and double killing.

When Elinor comes in a large fortune because of being the only blood relation of a woman who died without making a will, everybody is taken by surprise (including her) .

Some tension started developing between her fiancee and cousin, Roddy, because he didn’t want a living on his wife’s money and had feelings towards another woman, Mary.

The marriage was taken off by common consent while Roddy went on a tour to release the tension of the past few weeks.

Meanwhile, back in England, Mary dies in England due to Morphine poisoning at Elinor’s house by eating sandwiches served by Elinor herself.

All fingers point towards Elinor’s guilt and she is immediately arrested. While everybody is convinced of her guilt, the doctor Dr. Lord does not believe that. He goes to Hercule Poirot to seek his help.

Now, in a straight forward looking murder, with good reason to do so, can Hercule Poirot find some other clue or Elinor will be convicted for killing Mary?

Read this classic to find out!

PS: The ending of this novel is quite different from other Hercule Poirot novels as it ends in a court instead of a private gathering where he used to tell his initial assumptions and final conclusions. As a matter of fact, only a little mention is made of his name in the last part of the story and mostly the statements of witnesses are recorded.
